Travel and accommodation arrangements
a. Airports and transfer information
The nearest local airport to the Universiti Utara Malaysia is Alor Setar airport (airport code: AOR), in the northern tip of Peninsular Malaysia. Participants arriving at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) need to arrange their connecting flight to Alor Setar (AOR). The conference venue is located some 45 minutes away, by taxi, north of the airport. (Taxi fare around USD20).
Participants may also travel via Bangkok International Airport (BKK) to Hat Yai International Airport (HDY) in the southern part of Thailand. The conference venue is located some 45 minutes away, by taxi, south of the airport, crossing the Malaysia-Thai border. (Taxi fare is also around USD20).
b. Immigration requirements
All visitors to Malaysia must have a valid passport and visa. Participants should obtain appropriate entry visas to Malaysia from the diplomatic or consular mission of the Government of Malaysia at their point of origin or en route to Malaysia. Participants are advised to consult with Malaysian Embassy or consular missions regarding visa requirements or visit the website http://www.imi.gov.my/
c. Hotel accommodations
Accommodation for participants can be reserved at the EDC Hotel, Universiti Utara Malaysia, Sintok, Kedah, MALAYSIA Telephone: +604 928 8888, Fax: +604 928 8825. Daily room rates range from RM150 to RM350 (Special rate for participants only). To facilitate hotel reservations, participants are requested to contact the Event Secretariat.
d. Other Information
Local climate
Tropical climate with warm weather all year round. Temperatures in Northern Malaysia range from 21ºC (70ºF) to 32ºC (90ºF). Annual rainfall varies from 2,000mm to 2,500mm.
Smoking
Meeting rooms and offices in Universiti Utara Malaysia are smoke-free areas. Smoking is restricted to designated smoking areas only.
Time
Eight hours ahead of GMT and 16 hours ahead of U.S. Pacific Standard Time.
Electricity
Voltage is 220 - 240 volts AC at 50 cycles per second. Standard 3-pin square plugs and sockets.
Weights and measures
Malaysia follows the metric system in weights and measures.
Currency and foreign exchange
The unit of currency is Malaysian Ringgit indicated as RM. USD1 is roughly equivalent to RM3.30. Foreign currency can be converted at banks and money changers.
Banks and banking hours
Two commercial banks are operating on the UUM campus, namely the CIMB Bank and Bank Islam Malaysia Berhad (BIMB), Banking hours are Mon - Fri: 9.30am to 4.30pm. Sat & Sun: Closed.
Airline reservations
Malaysia Airlines (http://www.mas.com.my) and AirAsia (http://www.airasia.com.my) fly regularly to Alor Setar. A number of other international airlines operate regular services to and from Malaysia. Participants are advised to confirm their bookings for return/onward travel prior to their departure for or on arrival in Malaysia.
Internet and e-mail services
The Internet service, using WiFi hotspots, is available at the event location, free of charge.
Laptop/notebook computers
Some technical breakout sessions will require access to laptop/notebook computers. As the secretariat will not be providing any laptops for delegates, please be sure to bring your own if you require access to a computer.
Dress code
The dress code for the conference and evening functions is smart casual. Please note that comfortable sports attire is required for the recreational activities.

First-aid and medical services are available at the University Health Center for 24 hours. Please contact the Event Secretariat for assistance.
